Mission

The Haldane School Garden is a living 'outdoor classroom' where students K-12 engage in hands-on, project-based learning. It serves as a natural space for scientific inquiry, a place where students routinely observe, investigate and hypothesize how the natural world functions. Standards-based, grade-level curriculum (for Science, Math, Social Studies, History, ELA, Foreign Languages and the Fine Arts) is applied to the garden in ways that bring complex concepts to life in real-world, tangible ways. During the winter months the School Garden extends to the Middle School Greenhouse, which serves as an experiential, indoor growing space.

Management

Haldane's PTA Garden Committee is a group of volunteer parents that manage and maintain the garden while providing support to teachers in how to integrate garden learning into their curriculum. Haldane School Garden is not a part of the annual operating expenses of the Haldane School District and is 100% funded through grants and private and in-kind donations. It is run by volunteer labor alone.

The Garden Committee meets weekly to tend the garden after school. All experience levels are welcome. Please check the calendar for schedule dates or email us at growinghaldane@gmail.com for further information or to be placed on our mailing list.

History

The garden broke ground in 2009, thanks to the vision and labor of many dedicated parents, students, teachers and community leaders. Generous grants from the Hudson Highlands Land Trust (HHLT) and the Haldane School Foundation (HSF) made construction possible, and the garden has been operational since 2010.
